I spend hours pouring through magazines, fashion sites and industry sites/magazines to hunt down the seasons hottest trends. Beauty Crush : Ellie Goulding

I don’t know about you guys, but I have quite a few beauty crushes ranging from the celebrity kind to the work of fellow industry peers. One of my very top celebrity hair/makeup, and lets face it-style in general, crushes is Ellie Goulding. She has some awesome songs (go listen, now…I’ll wait) and I have a soft spot for rocker-like hair cuts.

I adore the heavy bang, blonde and that fabulously daring shaved section. This is the type of hair I always wish for but unfortunately don’t really have the right texture to pull off. One of my favorite classic makeup looks is pairing winged liner with a classic nude lip or my recent favorite, a bright pink.

Ellie’s pulled back bangs in the last photo is going to be one of my favorite looks this summer as I’m trying to grow out very thick bangs, which can be irritating.

To replicate …

1. Dry hair straight, or run an iron over to create sleek and smooth strands. Remember to use a heat protectant product, I’ll opt for one to reduce frizz too.
2. Sweep hair back into pony of your choice, opt for a higher one like Ellie’s for a bit more daring/fun vibe. Clip bang out of the way and smooth stray hairs in place, mist with hairspray.
3. Backcomb bangs with a fine tooth comb and mist with hairspray. Smooth backcombed strands back into a perfect pompadour and secure with bobby pins. Mist the finished look with a flexible hold hairspray (I like Healthy Sexy Soy Touchable) and top with shine spray.

Spring Inspiration

Spring is possibly one of my favorite times of the year both with the weather as well as fun, new trends. Spring usually brings about feelings of change, especially with beauty, which makes my life a whole lot of fun.

Waves.

I love waves in spring time and bonus, it’s so much easier to work with humidity than against it. Enhance natural texture or use an iron to mimic a 40s-inspired style. I like to set any sort of waves with a flexible hold spray, my favorite is Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Touchable.

Braids.

Braids are huge for spring and so easy to get a hang of for nearly any occasion. They are one of the easiest style chameleons, able to be boho-chic, fun or elegant. Do you have a favorite braid to do on your hair?

One of my favorite cure-alls to a bad hair day is a top knot; big bonus if you pair it with statement makeup like my go-to, a bright pink lip.

Tutorial : The braided ballerina bun

Spring has arrived! And so has frizz. On days where my hair just won’t behave or the frizz is going to fly, my never-fail style of choice is a ballerina bun. The braid works especially well for unruly bangs, curls or waves. Dress it up for work or an event and down for errands or casual dates.

Put hair into a ponytail of your choice, at your nape works well for longer hair. I opted for lots of texture and with the humidity, my hair wasn’t going to behave any other way.
Braid bangs back and pin into position, locking your pins in an ‘x’. Smooth any stray hairs back into the ponytail. Mist with a workable hairspray like Soy Touchable.
Backcomb ponytail to your hearts content! The bigger your backcombed pony/mess, the easier it will be to pin, trust me. Mist backcombed pony with hairspray.
Coil strands into a bun and shape. Once it looks right, begin putting pins in place. Finish it off with hairspray to last all day. My favorite hairspray for rainy/humid days is Sexy Hair Spray & Play Harder.

Now, go conquer the weather in style!

Tutorial : Textured Retro-Inspired Updo

Spring is coming! Which means tons of events that require special styles are coming. Proms, weddings, warm nights with long date nights; whatever it is, try something new. I love playing with texture as temperatures warm up and wanted a sweet, retro-inspired vibe.

I played with some modern texture, enhanced with Redken Wool Shake, and blow dried my bangs in an ‘s’ shape prior to pinning up. I used my fingers to loosely backcomb a bit in the crown then pinned my first side back (below, left). Next, take the top section of hair from just below ear and pin back with a second pin (below, middle).

Divide remaining hair in half and loop the back section up and pin (above, right). Repeat loop and pin with the remaining hair (below). Finish the look by spreading out the loops and pinning until it looks right to you. Remember to put your bobby pins in like an ‘x’ so your style stays in all day, and don’t forget the spray! I like Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Touchable. I use it before, during and after to keep my style in all day.

I’m thinking this will be a perfect style for a casual date on a warm night or dress it up for prom and daytime weddings with simple accessories. I’m especially loving this flower for a daytime event. To keep it casual, I’m dying to get pins like these to incorporate in and for big events, I absolutely need this bow headband!

I adore romantic curls and braids for a sweet date night. Opt for soft and flowing textures with a bit of an “undone” look. A braid (or two!) and a simple updo are sweet, classic and yet incredibly on trend for spring. Paired with an on trend blunt-cut fringe, you’ll have a knockout look.

I love the simple heart manicure for a sweet and classic look that is still fun. Opting for a rich purple hue or daring metallics won’t make your look too girly while still having that air of romanticism.

It’s hard to go wrong with a classically contoured smokey eye, the first photo draws it’s inspiration from Adele’s famous eye makeup. I’m also loving the idea of sparkles paired with under-eye liner for a more dramatic look. Searching for a pretty pink lip? Love this smashbox combo of lipstick and gloss for a classic nude pink.

Product Review : Keratin Shot

Has winter been stressing out your hair as much as it has been mine? I’m seeing a lot of dull, dry, static-filled tresses these days and am currently battling dull/dry tresses on myself. My new favorite remedy is great for everyone, but especially for us color treated gals. So, what is it?

Healthy Sexy Hair Keratin Shot.

I’m super loving this brand new (quick!) salon service to replace keratin in the hair to lock in moisture and color. My once hard to manage fine/chemically damaged/wavy hair was instantly easier to style and noticeably shinier.

Happy New Year!

Did you make any beauty resolutions? Even though I tend to change my hair and styles up somewhat frequently due to the nature of my work, I think I’m going to be pushing my beauty routine this year to frequently try new makeup and hair looks. Winter Inspiration

This time of year brings numerous parties and events where you want to look your very best. I know that I tend to wear out my old stand by styles (hair, makeup and nails) and am constantly searching for fresh ideas. Here are some of my favorite inspiration ideas.

hair.

Trying a simple three strand braid to your favorite go to upstyle for instant sweetness.

This tousled upstyle is chic, and easy. Set in hot rollers (or curl with an 1 1/2” barrel or larger iron), allow to cool then pin in place. It shouldn’t be perfect so have fun!

Have you been thinking about trying a new length? A classic mid-length bob is always a flattering cut that has a lot of great styling options.

I’m loving this bold red hue to brighten up the gray days of winter. A bit unrealistic all over for you? Try a fun peek-a-boo highlight in the hue!

makeup.

This amped up natural eye look screams everyday chic. I’m definitely planning on giving this a try.

This lovely blend of hues would work fabulous on both blue-eyed gals or green eye mavens. I think a romantic date night would be ideal to rock this sexy look.

I absolutely love this glam look for a holiday party or date night. Would you give this a try? I think I’d test it out with a less stark contour color, but that’s mostly because I don’t usually opt for such a vixen look.

I adore this nail look, and it’s so easy! This photo is shown with two coats of Rimmel “grey matter” followed by OPI “Servin’ up Sparkle” on tips. Easy!

Awards Season : American Music Awards

Awards season is here! Do you like to watch the red carpet or the awards? I always love seeing what is trending on the red carpet. Lets start off with some of the best and worst looks from this year’s American Music Awards.

Simply fab.

Audrina Patridge

Audrina Patridge modern take on a retro glam classic works perfectly with her milk chocolate hair color. I think a different dress would’ve made this look completely classic and over the top but this dress falls a bit flat.

Selena Gomez

Sleek and shiny tresses paired with a retro glam style really lets Selena shine. I’m digging Selena’s fabulous balayaged highlights, this seasons hottest color trend.

Falls flat.

Taylor Swift

Not much can be said of Taylor Swift at the AMAs this year. Bland hair, boring dress, safe makeup. Yawn.

Katy Perry

This styling in contrast to this dress (I think a dress? or Dolly Parton’s spacesuit) as well as the tone of the pink dress, it’s just off enough to not work for me.

Almost there.

Amy Heidemann

The styling on this is flawless except for the fact Katy Perry has driven this retro-kitsch look into the ground. Take a more modern infused approach to recreate this look and probably ditch the costume-like ensamble.

Nicki Minaj & Katy Perry

Who has your favorite pink? I’m digging Nicki Minaj’s cotton candy hue but there’s a fierce tie between makeup favorites. Would you try any of the other AMA looks for upcoming holiday parties or a date night? This time of year I love looks with big shine. I have clip in extensions. They were made for me, they measured my head to give me the best fit. However, my hair is fine and sometimes they slip. Any recommendations for what could help?

Hello!
Clip in extensions are a lot of fun to play with! I also have pretty fine hair and have worked with many other fine haired gals with clip ins and the good news is you can get them to stay, honest.

First, how do you put your extensions in? Do you section your hair up and then clip or do you backcomb first? My favorite way to get clip in extensions to stay is to backcomb the section (move your comb in a “c” shape) where I’ll be clipping with a fine tooth comb (a denser cushion) and spray with a medium/firm spray. My favorite is Big Sexy Spray & Stay. If you have trouble getting backcombing to stay, you have to try Big Sexy Powder Play, a volumizing/texturizing powder. It’s amazing. Your backcombing will last all day if you pair the two, promise!

Community : Everyday Heroes Wear Pink

With October being Breast Cancer Awareness month many of our favorite products (from the grocery store to your favorite salon) have received a pink face lift. At Eleven West Salon & Spa, where you can find me behind the chair, we have decided to reach out and increase awareness in our own way while giving back to our community.

Everyday Heroes Wear Pink.

This October (you know, Breast Cancer Awareness month) you have the opportunity to nominate a hero in your life who has survived, is fighting or caring for someone with breast cancer. Eleven West Salon & Spa will honor one hero from each category with the ultimate day of pampering designed just for them.

One person from each category will win a customized day of pampering from highly trained technicians. Nominations will be accepted through October 31,2011. Hello! I have naturally curly hair that I straighten, and aside from a heat protectant, I don't use anything on my hair (hair spray, etc) as I don't like the way it makes my hair feel. I have bangs, well, try to have bangs, but it is difficult to train the part and keep them from splitting. I was wondering what tips you may have to help keep my bangs in place and keep from separating without the use of hairspray or recommend a hairspray that doesn't leave a gritty feeling behind? Thank you!

What a great question! I love curly haired gals as well as bangs, but there are unique issues to address when you pair the two.

My favorite technique for training the hair without the use of products is to sleep in a bobby pin, pinning my bangs together or to a side. Anything to tame the split in your hair (something I also battle). I also pin my bangs while they are wet and I’m doing my makeup, before I style my hair. I understand you’re hesitant about using product in your hair but have you tried any of the new conditioning foams on the market? My favorite is Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Mellow which leaves the hair soft and weightless (you can blow dry or air dry this product!) while taming tresses.

If you’re thinking about simply using a bit of hairspray after styling and before you head out I’d recommend Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Touchable spray. It’s amazing. Seriously. It leaves hair very soft (due to coconut oil), shiny and pliable. It has a build-able hold so if you needed something stronger (a fancy night out?) simply use another spritz.

This soft chignon looks incredibly romantic but also subtly sexy. I love the interest in the chignon as well as the fact it isn’t too perfect, just a touch mussed. Keeping the hair soft around the face and high shine is key for this to not look too harsh.

60s Inspired.

Retro looks have been dominating runways for several seasons now and fall’s brides are no exception. Retro-inspiration from the Kate Spade runway was taken from 60s supermodel icon, Jean Shrimpton.

When done right, a retro inspired pony or tousled waves are never a bad look in my book. Much to my excitement, they are especially big looks for this fall’s brides. The key for a dressy retro pony is the bit of volume in the crown paired with the just off center part and hair covering the ears.

Questions to Ask Before You Change Your Hair

With season change I get a lot of questions about changing up haircolor or style. If you’re contemplating a change, there are a few key questions to ask your hair designer (and information to fess up!) to make 100% sure that the change is right for you.

Color Change.

A color change can often times be a big change, even a subtle color change can take getting used to. Avoid color mistakes and regret by asking your colorist a few key questions before you take the plunge.

Questions to ask your colorist :

What tones will best suit my complexion?
What is the realistic level of lightness for me to achieve given my current hair color? (Natural hair color or not-so-natural haircolor.)
Also consider asking : How many visits will it take to achieve this color? (Especially good to ask when going lighter several levels, think medium brunette to light blonde or platinum.)
How often will I have to come in for touch ups?
Will the texture of my hair change after I lighten it?
Do styling products and/or shampoo/conditioners for color treated hair really work?

Info to tell your colorist :

Any previous color including salon and/or box. Color is permanently on the hair until it is cut out, so think back! If you have opted for a box color, info on the brand of box color is helpful to your colorist too. Why? Previous chemical services often will effect and determine what colors will be possible to achieve on your unique hair history and color.
What type of water you have at home. City or well water (hard or softened). Why? Well water will often make haircolor fade out quicker or leave less than desirable tones on the hair, most commonly seen as brassy hued.
Current hair care routine and products.

Style Change.

A big style change can be very nerve wracking, especially if you’ve been on the receiving end of a bad hair cut before. There are several key questions you can ask your designer prior to a style change to make extra sure you’re ready for it.

Questions to ask :

Will this cut/style work for my face shape?
What is the styling routine of a cut/style like this on my hair texture?
What sort of upkeep (think bangs) or trims (especially for shorter lengths!) is required of this cut/style?

Designer Note : Please don’t ask your hair designer if they “know” how to do a specific cut. One less abrasive way to get that information is by asking, “are you comfortable executing this cut on my hair texture?”

Info to tell :

Current hair care routine. Blow dry or air dry? Always use hot tools or never?
How long you are willing to spend styling your hair.
Current products you use, from shampoo to hairspray.

Fall 2011 Color Trends

It’s my favorite time of year again, the fall color trend report! Gold and honey hues reign through blonde and brunette trends while reds stay on the warmer side as temperatures drop.

Brunettes.

This fall, brunettes have taken on warm hues which brighten and complement nearly every complexion. Think honey, amber, chestnut and maple tones.

Ashley’s amber and chestnut toned brunette transitions from summer to fall beautifully. High shine and fairly low maintenance if you’re naturally a medium brunette (levels 4/5). Emily Blunt and Shenae Grimes show off the ever popular ombré technique in this season’s warm brunette hues.

Reds.

Isla Fischer

Isla’s in between strawberry red and ginger red pulls summer’s hottest strawberry reds into fall easily. The key is the extremely high shine the keep this hue from falling flat. Rich velvety and rosy reds are (still) big this fall. Drew’s color totes the line between deep, rich rose red and auburn seamlessly. The warm undertones keep this color from washing her out, and makes this rose hue super wearable. If you’ve been wanting to try a more in-your-face color choice this fall, keep it wearable by staying on the warm end of the color spectrum like Bryce Dallas Howard is. Strategically placed balayaged areas keep this color looking youthful, never dull.

Blondes.

Brooklyn Decker

January Jones

Butter and honey blondes like January Jones and Brooklyn Decker have been spotted wearing are reigning supreme for blondes in fall. Ask for a warm honey blonde with just a few hints of gold around the hairline and in the crown to give a “halo-like” effect with the color.

Emma Stone

Emma Stone is still rocking the platinum locks as we head into fall. This is certainly not a look for the low maintenance. Prepare to head into the salon for several visits to get this look right and to be in for touch-ups every 3 1/2 - 4 weeks. Ask for cool toned highlights and champagne toned lowlights on an ultra blonde base.

Event Wrap Up : Douglas J Career Fair 2011

As many know, I am a [proud] alumni of the Douglas J Aveda Institute (Ann Arbor campus for me!) and will readily discuss my education when asked. My education was absolutely amazing and prepared me to enter the salon industry seamlessly. I like to support my alma mater and was thrilled when I was contacted to rep the salon I manage (Eleven West Salon & Spa) at this year’s annual career fair. I was even more thrilled when I found out the itinerary for the day, specifically the keynote.

Life as a Daymaker : David Wagner

Have you heard of the Daymaker movement? Being a Daymaker is as simple as a person intentionally performing acts of kindness with the mindset of making the world a better place. This one small gesture of daymaking creates a ripple effect around us, touching the world around us in a positive way. David Wagner is the man behind the movement. He is not only the author of Life as a Daymaker but also a world-renowned hair stylist (he studied under Horst M. Rechelbacher (founder of Aveda!)), salon owner, entrepreneur, & educator.

I first learned about David and the Daymaker movement during my first weeks on cosmetology classes at Douglas J. After hearing about the movement and stories from daymakers, I knew I had made the right choice in my future profession. Going to work everyday knowing, that day, I have the ability to effect others in a positive way is an amazing feeling. If you ever get the chance to hear David speak, go! His message reaches much wider than just hair professionals or service providers.

Hair Show & Networking.

Following David a 5 campus-wide student produced hair show showcased 5 looks from each institute, each campus with a specific theme. The students did great, there is a lot of talent throughout the institutes. Networking took on a new spin this year with salon’s circling around to students and their portfolios. Kudos to Douglas J for putting on a fantastic career fair this year. Back when I was a student we didn’t get the opportunity to have a hair show and were in a much smaller venue.

Trend Alert : LOX Extensions

I know extensions aren’t exactly a new trend alert however, these extensions are. The revolutionary technology of LOX Extensions has changed the extensions game. As a professional cosmetologist who has always had an interest in extensions, I’ve researched all of the types of extensions on the market (including bonding, fusion, and “track-like” systems, for example). LOX are the highest quality (100% remy human hair) and most value for your dollar in my professional opinion.

LOX Extensions.

One of the best things about LOX is the fact they have zero damage (when properly cared for) to the natural hair. Many extension systems on the market may last for 3 months then require a month or two break to allow for your natural hair to regrow before you can apply a new set of extensions. LOX Extensions last for 4 months and you can immediately apply a new set after removing the old.

Sound like a lot of maintenance and money?

Not especially. While yes, there are a few special products you need to use to properly care for your new hair investment, chances are you might already use them. I recommend Healthy Sexy Hair Reinvent shampoo & conditioner (available in either fine or coarse) as a sulfate free shampoo & conditioner option. You also want to avoid products with silicone in them. I’ll send you home with Silky Sexy Hair Frizz Eliminator (also available in fine or coarse) as a great option to use damp or dry with to eliminate frizz using silk and give long lasting shine. Also great to have on hand to care for your extensions is a weekly hair mask (I like Healthy Sexy Soy Tri-Wheat Treatment) and a leave-in conditioner (my favorite is Healthy Sexy Soy Tri-Wheat Leave-In). Your hair care regime probably won’t change very much unless you like to wash your hair everyday. LOX extensions are recommended to be washed 2-3 times a week so stock up on your favorite dry shampoo.

So I’m sure you’re really wanting to know how healthy they leave your hair once you decide to remove LOX. Using revolutionary double loop technology LOX extensions cause virtually no breakage, if cared for properly. Wondering what I’m talking about as I keep repeating double loop? The hair is inserted through the micro link once, then is inserted through a second time so that the natural hair is through the middle and around the link. This double loop method puts less tension on the natural hair shaft as well as blends your hair through the extension more. Couple the double loop technology with the new weft technology these extensions are some of the most natural I have ever seen. The secret to this is that the weft is sewn onto a small mesh strip that has had a very thin layer of polyurethane applied which allows the mesh to mimic the look and flexibility of human scalp, which also causes less tension on the natural hair.

Alright, alright LOX rocks. Let’s get to the big question, what is the investment?

I won’t lie, quality extension are an investment and should be treated as such. Hair quality is a huge factor in determining pricing. In my opinion, LOX is one of the absolute softest and healthiest extension hair I have ever worked with. Comparable salons in my area (Ann Arbor-Metro Detroit, Michigan) charge anywhere from $1500-$3000+ for extensions of similar quality. I charge $775-975(+) and your haircut is included in your application price. I know that seems ridiculous that I have to specify a haircut is included but at many, many salons you will find that on top of the huge investment you just spent on extensions, you now also have to pay more to have the extensions shaped and blended into your natural hair. Silly! As an added bonus, LOX can be colored to match your natural (or maybe not-so-natural) locks but with 39 color options, chances are you won’t need to have the LOX colored.
