Gent Trends : Summer 2011

Temperatures are rising and just like women, men want and need to update your look with the change in seasons. What worked for you in January won’t necessarily work for you in June, whether that be the actual haircut or maybe products. If you’re looking to make small tweaks or a big change, dive into this summer’s inspiration.

Neat & Tidy.

Alexander Skarsgard - GQ June ‘11

Darren Criss - GQ June ‘11

Side parted crops are still hot for summer. Easily polished up for a more formal event (wedding anyone?) or roughed up for a more casual approach.
What to ask for :  Keep the sides short, either a #2 or #3 guard or scissor over combed (my preferred approach) to the appropriate length. Keep the top long enough to lay down but not so long that it looks completely disproportionate with the sides.
Product to try : Redken Dishevel Fiber Cream. Love this product, specifically formulated for gents (but works great for ladies too!) which means a product that works without an overwhelming scent. Medium hold, with a natural finish - no high shine looks here.

Stubble. Always summer cool.

Ryan Gossling

Tired of everyday grooming? Take heart, stubble is in. The key to pulling off this look in a professional setting is keeping it groomed. That means you can’t look like you just went back woods camping for an entire week when you head into the office Monday morning.
How to groom : If you like Ryan Gossling’s look, try starting with a #3 guard over the entire beard area. From there, travel down to your neck with a #1 guard leaving out an approximately 2 inch section above the adams apple and under the chin. This 2 inch section gets a #2 guard and work to blend (carefully!) your #1 and #3 sections together. New gadget that I’m currently loving, pro vacuum trimmer, the only downside is it is not numbered by traditional barber guards but in millimeters.

Textured Fades.

Summer is a perfect time to test drive a more daring look. Do you always play it safe and just want a trim? Try asking for the top more textured, or taking your sides a guard (or gasp, even two!) shorter than normal.
What to ask for : For an extremely faded look like Joe Jonas, start with a #1 guard faded up to 2 inches scissor cut on top. This look is easily translated into a more extreme look (think pompadour) or tamed down to your needs (think Ryan Gossling).
Product to try : Always a hit is Redken Dishevel Fiber Cream but I also dig American Crew Fiber. Both give a natural look (low shine) but good all day hold.

Take it all off. (Again.)

Buzz cuts are always a must have for summer. The modern buzz cut is not the do it yourself at home with a pair of discount clippers from a mass retailer. The modern buzz cut pays attention to every detail to keep you looking sharp through the steamiest of days.
What to ask for : Always (even with a buzz cut) ask for the sides shorter than the top. One sure to please request is starting with a #1 guard in the nape with a #2 or #2 1/2 guard on top. The most important step to a successful buzz cut is blending. Make sure your hair professional takes a look at your cut from all angles, and always get the rinse after (it allows for longer hairs to pop up and be caught).
Product to try : Use products with sunscreen to protect that scalp that’s been hiding all winter. I’m loving Redken’s Sun Solar Screen with an easy spray on application or if a styling product is more your speed, try out Axe Styling Cream.
Pro tip : Wait to get your new buzz cut until a Friday, that way you can let your scalp get some sun over the weekend so you don’t blind coworkers. Make sure to use products with SPF!

Short Cuts - Spring/Summer 2011

Cropped cuts are huge this spring & summer, and for good reason. More and more celebrities are daring to take the leap into shorter locks and it has sparked a huge short hair movement both from other celebrities and into the everyday.

Emma Watson

Britt Maren

I’ve seen a lot of clients transitioning between Emma Watson’s crop to Britt Maren’s, only to do it all over again as temperatures rise. Platinum blonde with pinky-rose undertones (see Michelle Williams below) is very big for summer or butter blonde for those who like a little tonality left to the blonde. Thinking about taking the plunge for a shorter ‘do but worried about style options? Take a cue from Ginnifer Goodwin (below) and try a choppy cut that can look either polished or perfectly mussed.

Michelle Williams - icy platinum & pink undertones

I love how glam Michelle makes her crop simply by styling it off her face. So simple and easily recreated for a glam night out. Never underestimate the power of a well placed hair accessory either. Take a cue from Michelle (below) on the cover of Madison magazine. I’m currently digging this art deco inspired headband and this black and white feather comb for a glamorous night out.

Growing out a crop and unsure about a transition cut and/or style? Carey Mulligan (below) is a style maven who has been gracefully growing out a cropped look. I love her butter blonde hue and irresistibly cute bangs.

Mid-length cuts are still trending as we enter summer. A slew of celebrities have recently chopped very long flowing locks into mid-length styles; think Jennifer Aniston, Vanessa Hudgens and Nicole Richie (below). Texture is still hugely trending and for good reason. The added heat styling and extra product use combined with environmental factors can make for damaged hair pretty quickly. AnnaLynne McCord (below) has been seen on the red carpet a lot lately rocking her natural curls, curly girls unite!

If you were thinking about taking the plunge and chopping your locks did you find style inspiration? Or perhaps are finally ready to let your natural texture shine? I can set you up with the perfect set of products to tame / enhance your texture or help you take the leap into short hair. You can find me behind the chair at Eleven West Salon & Spa located in downtown Ypsilanti.

Bridal Hair Trends Spring/Summer 2011

Spring brings lovely flowers, warmer temps, new trends to try and of course…wedding season. We’re entering prime time wedding season in Michigan and what better way to start it off than with a look at 2011’s hottest bridal looks?

Long & Loose.

This romantic favorite has been all over high profile weddings in 2011. Easy and breezy, perfect for the woman who doesn’t want to fuss too much with her hair. However, not so perfect for those hot, high humidity summer days that Michigan is famous for.

I love the mix of textures in the above photo. A bit edgy and trendy without being too garish or avant garde and can easily transform to whatever style you wish with the right accessories. I’m still loving birdcage veils but I’m probably bias as I wore one for my wedding (below).

Sculpted Romance

Playing into a lot of sculptural trends this season, bridal looks have picked up hints of that. Think a lot lighter and much more romantic than looks from the runway. I love the sculpted design on Mila Kunis (below) for a hot, humid summer wedding. It’d look amazing with a small accent comb (this one is currently a favorite of mine).

Avant Garde Trends

Hair: Jean Sweet and Tracey Stokes | Photography: Jean Sweet | Make-up: Jessica Sawicki

Staying right in line with Spring/Summer runway trends, a lot of bridal looks this season are incorporating texture. I absolutely love the big hair in the first avant garde photo with it’s cloud like texture. However, the sculpted design is amazing as well. While both of these are probably too trendy for most brides these would be excellent options for ‘maids (as long as it doesn’t outshine the bride!) or maybe a summer cocktail party.

What looks are you loving this season? If you’re getting married, are you going to stick with something very classic or maybe try something a bit more trendy?

Travel Pack Giveaway [closed]

Spring seems to be stuck in neutral here in Michigan which seems to have everyone a tad downtrodden. I know that I’ve been dreaming of a summer getaway with warmer temperatures and fabulous vacation hair. So to help make that fab vacation hair reality, mdh is giving away a travel pack of favorite Sexy Hair styling products.

Travel styling pack giveaway includes Blow Dry Volumizing Gel, Powder Play, Volumizing Dry Shampoo & Spray & Stay (all by Big Sexy Hair).

The travel styling pack contains some of my favorite products in awesome travel sizes perfect to tag along on all of your summer adventures. Blow dry volumizing gel (1.7oz) is a great product to use to achieve an all over light web of support to start your voluminous style. Once your hair is dry pop in some powder play (.07oz) to give your style lots of volume and texture. Apply powder play at the roots for instant lift or sprinkle throughout your strands for lightweight texture, control and separation. If you’re looking for more of a slept in bed-head look, try the volumizing dry shampoo (1.1oz) first then add in a bit of powder play. Or, just use the volumizing dry shampoo to get one more day out of your style and amp up that volume. Finish your look off with spray & stay (1.5oz), an intense hold spray to make sure the style you want lasts for as long as you want.

To win, here’s a couple things you can do:

1. Leave a comment on this post telling me your favorite look from the Spring 2011 styling trends (part 1 or part 2) report & if you’ll try to recreate it at home or not.
2. Blog, tweet (include #mdhair) or facebook about this giveaway & leave each separate links here. (Make sure to leave the link in a comment on this post so I can give you credit!)

  • Due to the nature of the products given away please only enter to win if you are close to Ypsilanti, MI & we can arrange a local pick up of prize pack. (Sorry! It’s those pesky flammable hairsprays!)
  • This is NOT a sponsored post. All prize products were purchased with my own hard earned cash.
  • Entries close at midnight 5.15, winner will be drawn 5.16.

Winner will be announced on mdh next week [update: winner will be announced 5.16 due to comments being down last week] and will also be announced via twitter & mdh on facebook so make sure to follow & like! To be fair I’m going to answer my question too. My favorite (wearable) look from the spring trend report is the Diesel high texture look. I plan on trying it on the first day my hair refuses to behave, I’ll make sure to take a picture to share. I also love the Sonia Rykiel print ad, so lovely.

Good luck!
